Hostel: socialising and movement. Guesthouse: depth and locals. Apartment: cooking and routine. Boutique hotel: events, dates, recovery.

Choose by purpose first, then optimise price within that category. The wrong category at any price is still the wrong stay.

Sort by 'review score' first, then add filters for kettle, washing machine and a window. Three small filters that change a stay enormously.

Read the worst three reviews of any place before booking — that's where the truth lives. If the worst reviews are about cold tea, you're safe. If they're about the lock or the smell, walk on.

Hostels: best for solo travellers under 35 who want easy company. Avoid for couples — privacy is the missing piece.

Hotels: best for short stays, late arrivals, and when you don't want to think. Pay for the front desk and the breakfast — it's the whole product.

Apartments: best for stays over four nights. The kitchen pays for itself in two breakfasts, and the laundry pays for itself by day three.

Boutique: best when the trip is the stay. A great boutique room becomes a memory in itself — book one for a quiet anniversary or a milestone week.

Early starters need a quiet building and a strong shower. Late risers need blackout curtains and a late breakfast. Light sleepers need anywhere not facing a main road or a bar.

Read the recent reviews for the things you actually care about — not the average score. Filter the reviews to single travellers, families, or couples like you, and the picture sharpens immediately.

Walking time to the nearest metro or train (not driving). Real photos within the last 12 months (not staged ones). Recent reviews (not the curated 5-star wall). Cancellation policy (read it, don't skim). Total price after taxes and cleaning fees.

Any single one of these can change the whole stay. All five together gives you the actual booking, not the marketing version.

No exterior photo of the building. Every recent review mentions cleanliness as a 'small' issue. The host has only one listing and only opened the account in the last 60 days.

Any one of those signs is a yellow flag. Two of them is a red flag. Three is a guarantee that your night will involve a small disappointment and a long conversation with support.
